For this reason, a two-state solution is now nearly impossible: more than half a million geographically-dispersed, armed Jewish settlers live in the West Bank, and many Palestinians work in settlements or hold Israeli work permits. “Israel” and “Palestine” describe the same land.

Any one-state alternative must still protect distinct identities, self-government, and religious traditions. Switzerland offers a workable blueprint. Its 26 cantons give roughly nine million people local autonomy, their own laws, and cultural identities across languages and religions. A seven-member Federal Council, elected by parliament and rotating the presidency yearly, handles national matters.

Local rule and free movement helped Switzerland avoid the worst of earlier religious wars. It now ranks near the top of almost every index of political freedom and economic prosperity.

If such a system were implemented in Israel-Palestine, all groups would keep ties to the whole land while exercising autonomy under equal rights and “one person, one vote.” Some cantons might function as majority Jewish or Muslim; others could be secular or bilingual or serve important minorities such as Christians and Druze. Settlers could remain; checkpoints would come down; people could “vote with their feet.” Geography, rather than rigid ethnic lines, would define borders.

As part of a transition plan, dispersed stock ownership modeled on Czech vouchers would give Palestinians an economic stake. Government owns utilities, transport, most land in Israel, and much land in the territories. Shares in privatized firms could create a shareholder class, address grievances, and turn settlers into owners.

A gradual and piecemeal transition to a Swiss-style canton system for a united Israel-Palestine based on one person, one vote, combined with privatization, presents the most realistic off-ramp that preserves coexistence and distinct identities.

For more details about the plan, see the following:
https://www.independent.org/tir/2026-fall/a-swiss-style-canton-system/

and

A Swiss-Style Canton System The current realities on the ground in Israel-Palestine have produced a de facto single state between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean […]

["post-16554","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
